4 Program Guidance & Admission
5 Personal Guidance During Stay
1 Sign-up & Registration
1.0 National Partner Guidance
The GKX supportive network program is available exclusively through our international program partners, who help students assess whether Denmark is the right choice for their studies. Our partners are familiar with the program and can address most IGCSE and IB Diploma questions, covering both academic requirements and personal maturity. They also provide continuous support to students and parents throughout their studies in Denmark.
1.1 Preliminary Assessment of Student Readiness for Studying Abroad
An evaluation of the student's personal maturity and academic competencies to determine their preparedness for studying abroad without parental supervision. This preliminary assessment is crucial to ensure that both the student and their parents fully understand the advantages and potential challenges of completing the high school diploma in Denmark.
1.2 School Advice I: Academic Advice
Studying abroad for one or more years and completing secondary or high school is much more than just “a year or two abroad.” These years lay the foundation for future studies and careers, so choosing school and electives is crucial to ensuring future opportunities. Our partners have a thorough understanding of how schools and universities operate in your country and can advise you on the required transcripts, grades, necessary electives, and academic levels necessary to meet the demands of future studies.
1.3 School Advice II: Accommodation Guidance
GKX offers various types of accommodation, ranging in price and level of independence expected from the teenager. Some schools offer traditional boarding, which includes meals, adult supervision, set curfew rules, and requires home stays during holidays. Other schools provide more independent living options, with or without meal plans, less supervision, and the possibility of staying during holidays. Financial government support is available for several of these accommodations. Our partners and GKX provide guidance on this as part of the school selection process.
1.4 Pre-Admission Consultancy
Studying abroad isn't for everyone. It’s not just about having solid academic grades but also about being independent, mature, and having supportive parents. We want to ensure that the teenager genuinely wants to study abroad and that their parents support the decision both financially and emotionally.
Our partners facilitate discussions with the teen and parents to confirm these essential criteria before proceeding with the admission process. At this stage, partners also guide any special documentation required for single parents due to divorce, full custody, or widowing.
1.5 All information and needed support in the native language
Sending your teenager abroad to study is a significant decision, and we understand it comes with many questions and concerns. That’s why close collaboration with native partners is essential for us. It’s important that families can ask their questions in their native language without relying on a third language or tools like Google Translate.
1.6 Parental Guidance During Stay
Many parents believe that once their teenager is settled in their room and the physical arrangements are in place, the young person can manage, and parents can guide from a distance. However, our experience shows a different reality. Danish culture is distinct from that of Southern and Eastern European cultures. Schools expect students to be self-sufficient from the very first day. They must manage their schedules, check homework and assignments via the school’s intranet, and handle daily chores such as cleaning, laundry, and sometimes even cooking and shopping, depending on the accommodation type. Adjusting to these new responsibilities and harsher weather conditions can be overwhelming. Homesickness and difficulty adapting often follow. While GKX is ready to support students, it can be challenging for parents to express their concerns and frustrations in English. That’s why our partners are always available to offer guidance in the parents' native language, working with GKX to ensure everyone feels understood and supported during this transition.
1.7 Local Pre-Orientation
Our partners generally offer pre-orientation sessions a few weeks before departure to help prepare students for living abroad. These meetings cover various important topics, including understanding your new country's culture and school system, preparing for the move, practical information about holiday travel, banking, transportation, support during your stay, and networking with other teens and families embarking on the same journey. And most importantly, everything is presented in your local language.
1.8 Insurance
Can be booked from the national partner or GKX (see point 8.4).
1.9 Additional Services
Provided by National Partners: Some national partners may offer supplementary services as part of their local programs. These can include family events, regular follow-up meetings, or other year-round support activities. For a complete overview of the available offerings, please refer to your partner’s program description or contact your national partner directly for further details.
2 Living in Denmark Platform
2.0 Living in Denmark Platform
The GKX online platform (accessible at GKX.dk) offers regular updates on living and socializing in Denmark. It provides valuable insights into life in a digitalized world and Danish traditions and invites students to events with other international students. Both students and parents receive login access and can use the platform as much as they like, free of charge.
3 GKX Student Community
3.0 GKX Online Student Community
All GKX-students are invited to join the GKX student community, which is accessible on the GKX-website. Here, they can connect with other GKX-students, "hang out," and find information about GKX-events as well as selected national events.
4 Program Guidance & Admission
4.0 Program Guidance & Admission
GKX provides the following service as part of our professional evaluation process to determine whether a student possesses the necessary academic qualifications and personal maturity to succeed independently abroad. In our view, it is preferable to decline applicants who do not meet the required standards, rather than risk exposing them to failure by allowing them to begin a program they may ultimately be unable to complete.
4.1 Program Priority
We can't guarantee a spot at your "dream school," but if you have the qualifications for the applied school and can provide a GKX declaration confirming that you've passed our application process, including interviews, you'll be several steps ahead of other applicants. High schools value the guidance provided before and during your studies and understand that you'll receive personal support when facing the challenges of living abroad, far from parents, family, and friends. This recognition can significantly strengthen your application.
4.2 GKX Webinar
GKX has developed a webinar consisting of short video modules that provide an overview of key aspects such as the expectations of Danish schools towards students, a typical school day in Denmark, and the GKX support program. The purpose of the webinar is to ensure that parents receive all relevant information before deciding whether to proceed with the application process.
4.3 GKX Admission Test
It is important for us to ensure that each student possesses the necessary personal and academic qualifications for the program. To support this, we have developed a admission test in which applicants respond to a series of questions, provide their most recent examination results and grades, and upload a short video introduction. This video enables us to form an impression of the student’s personality and level of English proficiency.
Your national partner will provide a link to the test. GKX will then evaluate the submitted materials and inform thenational partner of the outcome.
4.4 GKX Group Interview
The student is subsequently invited to participate in a group interview together with other candidates, during which a final assessment of the student’s suitability is made. The interview is conducted in English and typically takes place in the evening or on a weekend. The session lasts approximately one hour and usually includes 2 to 4 students.
4.5 Registration in the GKX Applicant Program (Exlink)
Once the interview has been completed and the Exclusivity Fee is received, a link to the GKX application in Exlink will be sent. In this system, the student registers all required information, and both the student and their parents can monitor the application process and upload additional documents as needed. The national partner has access to view the application and submitted information but cannot make any edits on behalf of the student.
4.6 GKX Recommendation Letter
Once the GKX admission process is completed and a pre-admission agreement is reached with the chosen high school, students receive a recommendation letter to include with their high school application. This letter confirms that GKX has thoroughly assessed the student's academic and personal maturity through their application, transcripts, diplomas, and an online interview with GKX. It also assures the school that GKX will support the student throughout the study years in Denmark if s/he is offered a study place.
4.7 IB High School Guidance
Choosing high school from a distance can be challenging without a clear understanding of the schools and towns. While it may seem safer to apply to schools in larger towns for better social and spare-time options, Danish towns generally offer a wide range of activities. With many international classmates, socializing is rarely an issue. Therefore, it’s more important to focus on schools that provide electives that meet students' future academic needs.
To help international students select the right school, we offer individual consultations with the student and their parents. During this meeting, we discuss the student’s future academic plans, elective needs, hobbies, and accommodation preferences. Afterward, the student will receive a list of 1-2 recommended schools, outlining their benefits and potential drawbacks. Once the student has made their choice, GKX contacts the school for pre-approval and provides the necessary application links, along with a GKX Recommendation Letter.
4.8 Registration Name for School and Boarding
Some high schools, boarding schools, dorms, and private apartments/rooms require a Danish contact person for minor applicants. When a registration name is required, GKX provides a document confirming the student’s participation in the program and that we have taken the necessary backup measures as required by the school.
Important: If a student cannot stay in their boarding room due to illness or requires extra care and supervision, they must apply for a local contact family (see under “eXplore eXtended”).
Currently, only Viborg Boarding School requires a local living registration name for boarding.
5 Personal Guidance During Stay
5.0 Personal Advice & Support
It is important for us to continuously ensure that the student is thriving and feeling well. To support this, we offer a range of services for both students and parents designed to promote well-being throughout the program.
5.1 Individual Meetings
All GKX students are offered regular follow-up meetings with a GKX support person to discuss their new life in Denmark, including school, friendships, and free time. These confidential conversations are only shared with parents or teachers if the student has given their consent. Meetings can be held online or in person, depending on the student's needs and location. During the first semester, we aim to meet with students monthly, and as they adapt to life and studies in Denmark, we reduce the frequency with the student's consent. If there is a temporary need for additional support, more frequent meetings can be arranged. GKX may contact parents for long-term needs to discuss extra sessions and any associated costs.
Appointments are arranged via email, phone, or WhatsApp. GKX may contact parents to coordinate the first meeting if a student doesn't respond. Afterward, if the student doesn’t reply, it will be assumed there is no need for a meeting that month, and we will follow up the next month. Should the student or parents need an urgent discussion, they can contact us at any time for a quick appointment.
In rare cases, if our support staff believes professional help, such as a psychologist or coach, is needed, we will contact the parents to arrange consultations with a professional in Denmark or online with someone from the home country.
5.2 Monthly meetings
We have found that young students often do not prioritize individual meetings. Therefore, we have expanded our support to include regular group meetings, where a GKX staff member visits the students at their school. These sessions may include discussions about cultural adaptation, app installation, Danish traditions, or shared activities in the local area. The content varies depending on the season and the students’ needs.
In connection with each meeting, students will always have the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one conversation with the GKX staff member.
5.3 Parental Info Emails
We send regular emails to parents to guide and support their teenagers through the cultural experience and adaptation phase. These emails also include general program updates, holiday information, and more. At GKX, we understand how challenging and frustrating it can be for parents to be far away while their teenager is struggling. Our goal is to offer helpful advice and support to both you and your teenager during their time in Denmark.
5.4 24/7 Emergency Number
The emergency number +45 41 21 99 88 is available for urgent calls from students and parents/guardians outside office hours (weekdays 7.30 pm - 7.30 am, weekends, and national holidays).
Non-emergency calls made inside these hours will be charged 125 € per hour.
Definition of emergencies:
-
Students: Urgent situations requiring immediate adult support, such as severe homesickness, culture shock, integration challenges, accidents, or emergencies in Denmark or the home country.
-
Parents: Situations involving accidents or the death of family or friends in which sensitive information should not be conveyed over the phone, and assistance with follow-up or arranging return travel is needed.
6 Administrative Guidance
6.0 Administrative Support
In addition to personal support, we also assist with many of the practical everyday
matters that parents typically help their children with during the first years after leaving home.
6.1 Assistance for EU Residence and Danish ID Number
Students need a Danish Social Security number (CPR) and a digital identity (MitID) to live and study in Denmark for more than three months. These are essential for logging into the school’s intranet (Lectio), receiving official communication from Danish authorities, and accessing Denmark’s healthcare and educational systems. The process starts with applying for EU residence and then registering the student's address in Denmark. While it may seem complex, we simplify the steps to ensure everything is completed within the first month of the stay.
The Service Includes:
· Checklists for required documents for EU residence and local address registration
· Document review before online registration at Nyidanmark.dk (if desired)
· Accompanied visit to SIRI (the EU residence office) with a GKX representative
· Assistance with local town hall registration (if needed)
· Introduction to MitID, the secure Danish digital identification system.
· Installation of needed Apps connected requiring MitID identification
6.2 GKX Administrative Support
Moving to a new country can be challenging, not only in the beginning as everything falls into place but also later, as routines set in and new challenges arise. Everyday tasks like using public transportation or visiting the doctor may seem complicated when you are stressed about how it works. We assist with understanding letters from the Danish government, setting up a bank account, mobile number, travel card, and more.
All services are provided at the student's request. Parents can use the support service to understand Danish life and to help with specific questions related to the Danish way of life.
6.3 GKX Practical Support
Arrange and potentially collect a second-hand bike through platforms such as Facebook Marketplace
6.4 Spare Time Activities
Additional guidance for sports, music etc
7 Network & Events
7.0 Event & Networks
Building community and shared experiences are core values at GKX. That’s why we prioritize offering a range of activities that allow students to connect across schools and expand their social networks.
7.1 Pre-orientation
To ensure students have the best possible start in Denmark, we will host a virtual meeting in June with all students, parents, and GKX. During this session, we will cover key topics such as:
-
Do’s and Don’ts when living far from family and friends
-
The importance of building a “bridge” between studies and free time
-
How to navigate life in a digitalized country

Q&A session
The meeting will be recorded and can be shared upon request.
7.2 GKX Onboarding Meeting
As a supplement to the online pre-departure orientation held in June, we offer an in-person onboarding meeting for students and their parents upon arrival in August. During this session, we provide a presentation on digital life in Denmark, including the key apps the student will need to use.
The meeting also offers an opportunity to verify that the correct documents have been uploaded for the EU residence certificate.
Last but not least, it gives us a valuable chance to meet the parents in person before they return to their home
country.
7.3 Arrival Camp
Within the first 4-5 weeks after arriving in Denmark, Global KnowleX hosts an arrival camp
designed explicitly for pre-IB and IB Diploma students. The camp includes:
-
Workshops on living and studying in Denmark
-
Social activities with IB students from other high schools
-
Accommodation and all meals and snacks
The membership includes the participation fee, but students are responsible for covering transportation costs from their residence to the camp. While participation is voluntary, it is highly recommended.
8 eXplore Plus Services
8.0 GKX eXplore Plus Services
The GKX membership also provides access to a range of optional add-on services
that are not included in the standard package. These can be booked directly through the GKX online shop.
8.1 Additional help for emergencies
-
Private escort to the hospital, if urgently needed
-
Private escort to the closest airport if home travel is required
-

8.2 Network Meetings, Including Light Lunch or Dinner
Regular network meetings include invitations to local events, such as visits to companies or organizations, along with tours and presentations. Membership includes a limited number of these meetings, but students can book additional meetings if desired.
Transportation for regional or national meetings is generally not included and must be arranged by the student. GKX is always available to assist students in navigating public transportation options.
8.3 Midterm Camps
Held in October/November and February/March, these student camps offer workshops on
integrating with Danes, participating in leisure and volunteer activities, and social workshops, along with time to relaxwith other international students in Denmark. Accommodation and transportation are included in the participation fee.
A minimum of 15 subscribed participants is required for the event.
8.4 Insurance
We recommend that all students take out a travel insurance policy that includes health coverage valid at least until they are registered with the Danish public healthcare system, as well as liability insurance covering the entire study period.
Some of our national partners include insurance in their program fee, while others offer it as an optional add-on.Insurance can also be booked directly through GKX.
8.5 Homework Support
If the IB Diploma curriculum becomes challenging or overwhelming, GKX can arrange a support teacher, such as a former IB student, to assist with homework, exam preparation, and more. Sessions can be held online or in person. A contract will be made between the teacher, student, and GKX, and pricing will be provided based on the student’s needs and the agreement with the teacher.
8.6 School Transition
For students enrolled in the IGCSE efterskole program, as well as pre-IB students who wish to transfer to a different upper secondary school after completing the pre-IB year, we offer guidance on school
selection and support with the application process.
Please note that it is not possible to transfer between IB Year 1 and IB Year 2.
8.7 Airport Service
GKX offers pick-up or transportation to the airport for arrivals or home travel. A driver will pick up the student and ensure their safe journey. Up to four students with limited luggage can share the car.
8.8 Bed Linen Package
Boarding schools require students to bring their own duvets, pillows, bed linen, towels, etc. These items can be shipped directly to the school or purchased locally upon arrival. Alternatively, GKX can arrange to purchase and deliver these essentials to the school. For more details and pricing, please email us.
8.9 Furniture
Most boarding rooms have a bed, a closet, a desk, a bookshelf, and a chair. If additional furniture is needed, it can be bought from local stores like Jysk or IKEA. Alternatively, GKX can assist in organizing everything as needed.
8.10 Group Travels
GKX offers students the opportunity to travel to larger towns, popular tourist destinations, and more. These trips range from day trips to weekend getaways, and up to 10-day trips during National Holidays. Trip details are announced via email, the GKX Student Community, and Newsletters.
8.11 Danish Online
Danish language classes are available online upon request for international students, including in the spring before their arrival. New courses are promoted through the GKX website, Student Community, and Newsletter.
9 Guardian Services
9.0 Guardian Services
Many of our students appreciate the opportunity to visit a Danish home from time to time. To support this, we have developed a few options that allow students to get to know a Danish family in a safe and structured setting.
It is important to emphasize that the development of the relationship largely depends on the student's own engagement and willingness to contribute to the friendship. No two families are alike, and as such, the experience and outcomes may vary significantly from one student to another.
9.1 Local Contact Family (LCF)
Engaging with a local family offers a unique opportunity to understand Danish culture and traditions better. The agreement includes 1-2 monthly visits for coffee, dinner, or weekend stays, depending on the student’s preferences and relationship with the family. If the connection doesn’t feel natural, a new family can be arranged. GKX carefully screens and interviews all families to ensure a safe environment for the student, ensuring shared values and expectations for the meetings.
Special Note about Holidays in LCF’s: The agreement covers up to three holidays spent with the family when the boarding school is closed. The Christmas and New Year holidays are not included, and we encourage students to travel home during this time. If the family is unavailable for other holidays, GKX will arrange an alternative family for the student.
9.2 Mentor Family
As an alternative to a Local Contact Family, we offer a Mentor Family arrangement, where the student can meet with a local family a few times throughout the year.
Please note that Mentor Families do not provide overnight stays during holidays. They are interviewed by phone but are not subject to home visits or required to submit a criminal background check. Typically, students visit Mentor Families in pairs.
9.3 Accommodation in Cost-Covered Host Families/Private Housing
While we generally recommend that students live in school dorms or colleges, in rare cases, we can arrange short-term housing with private families. This is typically for 2-3 months at the beginning of the stay, until a room becomes available in a dorm or college. The minimum stay with a host family is expected to be 4 weeks.
9.4 Particular Diet Restriction
If a student requires a special diet due to allergies or a vegan lifestyle, an additional fee will be charged to cover the cost of unique ingredients that are not typically found in an average household.
10 Year 2 & 3 Support
10.0 Prepaid Service Cards for Year 2 and 3
If the partner does not offer support in year 2 and 3, the family may purchase support services directly from GKX, either as single sessions or individual services. Support is agreed upon and settled directly with the family based on the number of hours used for the service (minimum charge: 1 hour).
10.1: 10-Hour Prepaid Service Card
The family purchases 10 hours at a time and receives a 10% discount, as well as exemption from administrative and bank transfer fees. The value of the card can be used toward support hours, student activities, and other offered GKX services. Usage is tracked and updated on the student’s profile in Exlink.
Any unused balance at the end of the study period is non-refundable but may be transferred to another GKX student.
10.2: 25-Hour Prepaid Service Card
Includes a 20% discount. All other terms and conditions follow those outlined in section 10.1.
10.3: Unlimited Support in Year 2
Equivalent to the “Basic Light” package when booked through the partner.
