From Confusion to Confidence:
Navigating Digital Denmark
Moving to Denmark means encountering a fully digital public system: the CPR number (the social ID no, red), MitID, and Digital Post. For Carla, Henk and their daughter Nalyssa from the Netherlands, the journey has been full of challenges, positive surprises, and invaluable support from GKX.
For Carla, this was her first time living in Denmark. Henk, however, had lived and worked here for a year during the 1990s and still spoke some Danish when he returned. This proved to be a major advantage – not least because his original CPR number could simply be reactivated.
Nalyssa first came to Denmark for a nursing internship and is currently back in the Netherlands to finish her degree. She plans to return to Denmark to work and be closer to her family.
Denmark vs. the Netherlands: A Digital Culture Shift
They were all struck by just how digital Denmark truly is. In short:
-
Digital Post: Almost all official communication from authorities arrives digitally via platforms like e-Boks – and usually in Danish.
-
Self-Service: Public services expect citizens to use online self-service portals rather than calling or visiting an office.
-
MitID: This is mandatory for nearly every official action, from managing taxes and healthcare to opening a bank account.
Compared to Denmark, the Netherlands relies more on paper documents. While they have their own digital ID system (DigiD), it isn't as universal: “In Denmark, you use MitID for absolutely everything. In the Netherlands, we only use digital ID for maybe 60% of things,” Henk notes.
Despite the initial complexity, both highlight how efficient Denmark becomes once you’re set up: “When you understand it and have all the apps, it works great. But the beginning is tough.”
Where to Start?
One of the biggest hurdles is simply knowing where to start. “The first challenge is knowing what you need to do at all,” says Nalyssa. “You don’t get an e-mail telling you what documents you need – but Britta from GKX guided us. If we hadn’t had the right paperwork or done things in the correct order, it would have been much more difficult.”
Even with Henk’s Danish skills, grasping the formal requirements was a steep learning curve. “If you don’t have help, it’s incredibly difficult,” Henk points out.
The Keys to Digital Denmark
For Nalyssa, support from GKX was essential: “I didn’t even know I needed to arrange things like the CPR number (Denmark's social ID number .red) – Britta helped with everything.”
Henk continues: “The MitID is the key to unlocking access to pretty much everything, and to get it, you need a CPR number as soon as possible when you arrive. Without MitID, you really can’t do anything – you can’t even sign a rental agreement with a social housing provider.”
What is MitID?
MitID is Denmark’s national digital identification system. It is used to securely verify your identity online and access almost all public and private digital services including banks, authorities, health information, taxes, and communication with the public sector. MitID is an app and it is free to get and use.
“Even though I understand the system now, I’ll still need to ask for help when I move here this summer,” Nalyssa explains. “There are always extra steps, and I still don’t fully know everything that's required. You often have to figure things out for yourself, and it’s so easy to miss something – which can cause real problems later if you get it wrong. It’s definitely much easier when you have guidance from someone like Britta”
Adjusting to Life and Digital Hurdles
Relocating involves adapting to new routines, meeting new friends and neighbours, and starting a new job or school – all of which is exhausting. Often, there is little energy left for complex digital “paperwork”.
As Nalyssa puts it: “You might think the hard part is the physical move – but actually, the hardest part is navigating the Danish systems.”
Henk adds: "Getting help from GKX saved us so much time and stress. We needed to set up insurance, bank accounts – everything – GKX helped us, so we could focus on building our lives beyond the digital transitions. And once you finally navigate the digital landscape – CPR, MitID, Digital Post – you feel like life in Denmark can truly begin.”
Their final verdict?
“Everyone needs a Britta in their life! It saves time, stress, and endless frustration.”
3 Tips for Your Digital Journey
1. The "Golden Rule": Don't wait.
Get your CPR number as soon as you arrive; it is the "master key" that unlocks MitID and everything else.
2. Trust the Process
Digital Post might feel like a maze at first, but once the apps are on your phone, life becomes incredibly efficient.
3. Find Professional Guidance
Use experts like those at GKX. You don't have to figure it out alone – having someone who smooths the way saves weeks of stress and prevents costly mistakes.
