MitID – Your Key to Life in Denmark

Our email series is coming to an end, and we would not want to leave you without taking a closer look at MitID and the CPR number (Danish personal ID number), which we have mentioned several times in the previous emails. Having these set up correctly from the very beginning is essential for a good start to your studies, as you will not be able to access services such as healthcare or your school schedule without them. 

So let's jump into it.

Denmark is one of the most digitalised societies in the world. Almost all communication with public authorities, banks, insurance companies, and many private services happens online. To access these services, you need a digital identity called MitID.

Why you need MitID

MitID is the national digital ID used in Denmark to verify your identity online. It is required to log in to many everyday services, such as online banking and managing accounts that contain personal information. Many students are also surprised to discover that they cannot even log into school systems like Lectio to check their timetable before they have set up MitID on their phone.

In Denmark, official letters from authorities, banks, and insurance companies are no longer sent on paper. Instead, they are delivered to your digital mailbox, such as e-Boks. To open and read these messages, you must verify your identity using the MitID app.

For Danes, this system has become a normal part of everyday life. But for international students and newcomers, it can come as a real shock if you are not prepared.

In reality, living independently in Denmark requires a few important digital keys. Without MitID and a CPR number, you cannot open a bank account, receive a salary from a student job, access many digital services, or manage important parts of your daily life.  

How to get MitID

In the first step, you must apply for EU residence; once you have received it, you can apply for your CPR number, and afterwards download and create the MitID. In principle, simple, but especially when applying as a minor, you must be aware of the documents to upload in connection with the application.

For many international students and newcomers, the process can be confusing. It normally requires several documents, appointments with different authorities, and careful coordination. If anything is missing: a document, a booking, or the right timing, the process can easily take weeks.

Digital ID Security: Stay Safe from Scams and Identity Theft

Unfortunately, cybercriminals often send scam emails or messages in Danish, urging users to click fake MitID login links. This can be confusing and lead to identity theft.
