Introduction to the IB Diploma Programme

Preparing students for success in higher education and to be active participants in a global society

The IB Mission

The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who desire to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

To this end, the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.

These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

IB Diploma in Denmark

The schools are often located in semi-rural districts where highly educated internationals have been recruited by successful local companies, and there is a need to offer an English-language program to the children of these families.

The IB tuition is free, with only minimal costs for calculators and notebooks. This means the student should expect to pay only for accommodation in Denmark, as well as the recommended support fee if no Danish contact person is available. Several schools offer affordable accommodation with full board and adult supervision.

IB Diploma will allow you to apply for admission to all international universities and higher education schools, including Danish universities with English programmes. Admission is subject to a sufficient level of the general entry requirements of the university or school.

Curriculum

The uniqueness of the IB Diploma comes from the high grade of individuality included in each student’s diploma, depending on the student’s electives.

Around 80% of elective subjects are offered at all schools. Still, subjects such as Global Politics, Business and Management, Danish and other second languages, etc., are only offered at certain schools. Therefore, it is worth considering the choice of school carefully.

Individual Combination of Electives

All students create their school programme by selecting one subject from 6 groups. 3 electives must be followed at High Level (HS) and 3 at Standard Level (SL).

In the table on the next page, you will find the electives printed in black, which are offered at all or most schools, while the red electives are only available at a limited number of schools; see the school page for more information.

The final creation of an elective depends on a sufficient number of applicants. Furthermore, 3 compulsory courses will be completed during the two years of study.

  • CAS (Creativity Action Service) The student is offered a series of self-created activities, where they discover that personal growth is not only achieved through academic education but also through being an active part of their community.

  • TOK (Theory Of Knowledge) teaches how knowledge is gained through philosophy, reflection, theories, and different social conditions, as well as how to think critically about the information presented to you.

  • EE (Extended Essay) is an individual, self-chosen research-based written assignment of 4000 words.

The IB curriculum is taught over two academic years, with final exams in the second year. No official grades are issued after the first year of study. For this reason, it is not possible to validate only one year, for example, for an exchange year.
