From Host Family To Local Support Provider

”I want to offer the kind of care and guidance parents usually provide when their children move away to study.”

Britta Brandt is the founder of Global KnowleX (GKX), established in January 2022 to support particularly underage European IB students in Denmark.

Her vision was simple: To offer the kind of care and guidance parents usually provide when their children move away from home to study.

From Host Family to Global Connections

Britta and her husband, Arne, began their journey with youth exchange in 2007, when they welcomed a young student from Thailand into their home to live with them for 11 months. Since then, they have hosted students from across the world, including Colombia, Russia, Japan, Brazil, Germany, and many more.

Over the years, their “family” has grown to include more than 20 young people from every corner of the globe. Each one leaves a mark and becomes part of their extended international family.

“When we go on holiday, our friends no longer ask ‘Where are you going?’  but rather ‘Who are you visiting this time?’,” Britta says with a smile.

Seeing a New Need

During the pandemic, Britta realized that many IB students in Denmark live on their own, without the everyday support that host families or exchange organizations typically provide. They manage studies, housing, and responsibilities as best they can, mostly far from home, family, and a sense of belonging.

That realization inspired her to act.

Creating Support That Feels Like Family

Through Global KnowleX (GKX), Britta and her team now offer practical assistance, personal guidance, and emotional support to international IB students. It is a safety net that helps them settle, thrive, and feel at home in Denmark.

In the autumn of 2025, the GKX team expanded to include Janni Engdal, Support and Program Coordinator, along with a couple of dedicated student assistants. All strengthen the program’s personal and professional foundation.

More than 50 students are already part of the GKX community, and Britta’s mission is clear: to make every student feel seen, safe, and cared for.

“Sometimes, all a student needs is a helping hand — or just a hug, a cup of tea, and a friendly talk about life.”

Welcome to GKX

Global KnowleX is more than a support service. It’s a family universe for international students and their parents, built on empathy, experience, and genuine care.

Britta Talks About Her Thoughts Behind GKX

Britta Brandt welcomes students, parents, and potential new partners, such as teachers, exchange organizations, and educational advisors, to contact her for an online meeting if they would like to learn more about the program and the opportunities for students to study in Denmark.
